About this product
Supplied as blocks, fused silica is the starting material for hardware in both the glass and the foundry industry. Since molten aluminium and zinc do not stick to its surface, contact parts such as launders, filters and distributors are machined from it. Blocks are worked to the required geometry in our cutting shop, and our large-size stock keeps lead times short.
Material
Fused silica is produced by melting high-purity quartz and letting it solidify in an amorphous state. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is close to zero, so it does not crack under rapid heating or cooling — which makes it ideal for suspended roof blocks, crown components and any part exposed to frequent thermal cycling. Its non-wetting behaviour against molten aluminium and zinc has also made it common in foundries.
